7th RARAF Microbeam Training Course, Columbia University, July 23-27, 2018 – EXTENDED APPLICATION DEADLINE
The 7th RARAF Microbeam Training Course at Columbia University’s Nevis Laboratories in Irvington, New York will be held on July 23-27, 2018. The course is designed to provide a “pipeline” of researchers interested in the use and development of microbeam facilities for research in biology, radiation biology, and radiation physics.
Sponsored by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), the five-day course will be offered for the seventh time to a limited group of scientists, selected by an open competitive application process. Application to the program is open to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty with an interest in the use and development of microbeam facilities. Both foreign nationals and U.S. citizens may apply to the program.
The goal of this training course is to give physicists and biologists a thorough and hands-on introduction to microbeam technology. At the end of the course, participants should understand how microbeams work, what experiments can be performed using a microbeam, why these experiments are of biological interest, and how to perform these experiments. As there will be a significant “hands-on” aspect, we plan for a maximum of 9 participants. The course will be designed to emphasize specific needs (e.g., imaging, designing a microbeam facility) as requested by the participants. This intense program is taught by leading Columbia University biologists and physicists who are pioneers in the development and use of microbeam technologies. Limited support for travel and housing will be available.
Interested applicants are required to submit:
1. a copy of their curriculum vitae
2. a statement (one page or less) of how they intend to use the knowledge gained from the course and whether they will need financial support.

A very limited number of participants will be able to arrange the shipping of biological samples before the course and stay afterwards to perform microbeam experiments using their own biological systems. Such arrangements will have to be made well before the course and approved by the RARAF staff.
